Home on the Rangely was a unified print and digital magazine, blog, website, and social-media presence produced during 2017–2018. It focused on authentic life in the remote West — specifically the small, rural town of Rangely, Colorado — capturing contemporary and historic culture, community, and landscape. The magazine featured local businesses, events, history, lore, art, photography, and regional stories, offering both residents and visitors a rich, nuanced portrait of life in this under-represented region. It was Rangely’s first monthly magazine and advertising venue built by, for, and about local people, places, and culture.

My Role

I led the entire project from concept to publication. I defined the editorial vision, managed content and design, produced and published each issue, and maintained the digital and social media presence. I also led a small team of local contractors and volunteers who contributed writing, photography, and blog content. I coordinated their work, provided editorial guidance, and ensured consistency in quality, tone, and mission. I managed advertising relationships, oversaw production workflows, and shaped the storytelling approach that unified the print and digital platforms.

Key Components & Deliverables

  • Developed editorial vision, tone, and mission: connecting past and present, community and culture, in a remote Western town.

  • Designed the magazine layout, cover art, typography, and visual identity for print and digital formats.

  • Produced content including feature articles, local business and event spotlights, community history, art and photography by regional artists.

  • Led local writers, photographers, and volunteers contributing articles, imagery, and blog posts.

  • Managed the website, blog, and social media platforms to expand reach beyond print readers.

  • Created and maintained a comprehensive regional calendar of events for the community.

  • Built and managed relationships with local businesses for advertising and sponsorship support, making the magazine financially sustainable and regionally relevant.

Impact & Significance

Home on the Rangely filled a unique niche — it gave local businesses, artists, residents, and history a platform when none existed before. By combining print + online media + community outreach, it strengthened regional identity, supported local commerce, and offered a source of pride and connection for residents. The magazine demonstrated my ability to design and deliver a full-media project that balanced editorial direction, visual design, marketing, community engagement, leadership of contributors, and business strategy.
